Since 2009, we’ve offered moms in the Lower Mainland tips on “how moms do Vancouver.” These have included where to taste the best donuts, find the best playgrounds, and shop the cutest locally designed onesies. We’ve held events, chatted on social media and shared hundreds of posts on our website. With a community of over 1 million local parents, Vancouver Mom is a top source for information, support and expert knowledge for parents in Metro Vancouver.

Being a Vancouver Mom in a pandemic has changed us all. So many of us carry the weight of our families. While also supporting our communities and reckoning the challenges marginalized groups face worldwide. To make a difference, we decided to encapsulate those experiences, acknowledge the load, and offer inspiration and hope.

As A Mother: A Sneak Peek

We’re thrilled to announce our newest project, As A Mother. It’s a collection of eight documentary-style short films featuring local Vancouver moms and their impact on our community. Each incredible human has shown resilience, pivoted their businesses, families and lives through the challenges of pandemic parenting, racism, systematic oppression and beyond.

Every Vancouver Mom Has A Story To Tell

Over eight interviews you’ll hear stories of advocacy and courage. In addition, you’ll see visions of triumph and joyful movements. From dreaming to creating, leading, juggling, empowering and caretaking —each story is unique and encouraging. After all, every Vancouver mom has a story to tell and we’re delighted to bring eight of these stories to life.

The Government of Canada Heritage Grant

Stay tuned for extended podcasts set to follow our As A Mother video release. Firstly, these stories touched us all. Secondly, we acknowledge that a Government of Canada Heritage grant partially funds the project. The grant supports communities through arts and heritage. In addition, all videos are thoughtfully filmed and produced by Kahani Pictures. Together, we’ve brought these stories to life.

Vancouver Mom is committed to sharing the lighter aspects of motherhood and the challenges, misrepresentations, and realities. After all, motherhood is an all-encompassing experience. So, as much as we’re here for the family fun, we’re also here for the culture, politics and underbelly of motherhood. Because, we know and you know, moms are changing the world from the side of the playground.

Aisha Kani founded I Dream Library

Finally, our As A Mother video series begins with episode 1, the powerful story of Aisha Kiani’s reluctance to accept the limited range of books in their son’s school library. They share how they advocated for representation, creating the movement that is I Dream Library. Aisha’s episode demonstrates the impact one mother can have on an entire education system, and even, on Yoko Ono.

Stay tuned for episode 1 coming to VancouverMom.ca on February 1st, 2022.
